Life is good for Claire McBeth in New York City. She’s single, very attractive, and has a comfortable apartment in midtown Manhattan. She’s also a science and technology reporter for The Sentinel, the city’s premiere daily newspaper. Her boss sends her to Texas for an exclusive interview with the billionaire who is about to put space tourism into the headlines. She also finds herself interviewing charismatic Herc Ramond, the chief pilot for the company. In the midst of their interview, Ramond is called to the bedside of a dying friend and co-worker who is also an amateur astronomer. Claire accompanies Ramond where his friend tells them a horrifying, bizarre and seemingly unbelievable story of how he came to be in the hospital. Afterwards, they are confronted by a menacing FBI agent demanding to know everything Herc’s friend said. When he refuses they are thrown into a raging cauldron of terror and violence, criss-crossing the country pursuing the multifaceted nightmare behind the incident. Ultimately, they uncover a cataclysm of unimaginable proportions concealed by a global inter-governmental conspiracy; one that could affect every person on Earth and from which they may be the only key to humanity’s escape.

I'd give it a star more if the bad guy's name wasn't so on the nose. The story itself moves slowly at first, and I didn't know whom to root for until about a quarter of the book was done - but it was already clear who the bad guy was. That I found dissatisfying. Then the pace picks up, the big picture becomes clearer, and the purpose and possibilities for the actors crystallize.

I suspect the author is a Christian, but tried very hard and with pretty good success to make the faith aspects few and natural. The main characters don't really speak about faith; it's more the fact that elements of a liturgy are quoted and there are instances of unusual non-violence (which don't arise from an obvious religious or ideological conviction of the characters - not sure how I feel about that).

Mr Roland has crafted a rather believable apocalyptic thriller with religious and miscegenetic overtones that sometimes distract a little bit but altogether fit into the story quite well. Sometimes he succumbs to the temptation to show off his research or tell us things he'd better have shown, but I nevertheless hope he continues honing his craft and returns with a sophomore book!

Blinding Fear eBook Bruce Roland Reviews

The author kept me in suspense throughout the book. No one wants to think the plot could really come true, but in this day and age, who knows?
This was a really phenomenal read. Lots of suspense I was not able to put this book down. Waiting for a sequel!
Interesting read with good suspense.
Not knowing what is in space makes you wonder after reading this book, could this really happen one day. Excitement, mystery and romance makes for a great book.
The first chapter of “Blinding Fear” instantly engages with an action episode that displayed knowledge about military operations and equipment. The detail added credibility that informed the whole book. Well paced, the story held my interest throughout and I finished it with a sense of having learned something. As a first novel, it left me waiting for the next one. Highly recommended.
3.5-Ending sets up for a sequel. I like to know that ahead of time. If there’s not going to be a sequel then I didn’t like the ending. I liked the character’s beginning stories, but was disappointed that so much was skipped to bring them to the present. It’s a minor point, but I do take issue with the Author having the main character think that at 5’8” 142 lbs was 7 lbs overweight. Most women would love to be that “overweight”. I wanted to see what was going to happen next, so that’s good, but I had some trouble believing some of the actions. I think there are plenty of issues to discuss for a bookclub.
This is a hard book to capture in a few words. Bruce Roland lays out a complex plot with multiple POV's that doesn't begin to converge until well into the book, but not to worry the ride is a good one. We've got pretty much everything here-good guys and girls, seriously bad opponents, massive conspiracy/coverup by the powers that be and lots of action. Characters are drawn with a depth that drew me in. Occasional unbelievability passes away as things move along at sufficient clip so the overall effect is not spoiled. Mr. Roland has fashioned a good old fashioned read and I look forward to future releases. Recommended.
