Dara Ruminor is a serious young duelist in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon, a land of dramatic cliffs and misty peaks where mysterious Fire magic runs through the stones like blood. The secluded kingdom has been peaceful for 100 years. Swords are used for sport, and successful athletes live like kings as long as the crowds love them.

Eighteen-year-old Dara needs to find a wealthy patron in order to duel professionally and avoid a lifetime working in her parents' Fire Lantern shop. Her efforts are disrupted when her coach asks her to train with Prince Siv, an infuriating - if handsome - young man who refuses to take the sport as seriously as she does. But the prince's life may be in danger, and soon Dara will discover that Vertigon isn't as peaceful as she thought.

As threats emerge from the shadows, Dara will have to raise her sword to protect Siv - if he doesn't irritate her so much that she decides to run him through herself.

Duel of Fire Steel and Fire Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jordan Rivet Caitlin Kelly Tantor Audio Books

Not a great YA series. Neither main character was especially likable, so it was hard to care what happened to them. There was a little too much of "Oh, I won't tell so-and-so about XXX" even though it would be logical and sensible to do so. it's always an awkward plot device and after the first five or six times it got very tiresome. I bought all three books and stuck it through to the end, but every one is a cliffhanger and I don't find this compelling enough to keep buying what should have made two books at most.

Duel of Fire Steel and Fire Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jordan Rivet Caitlin Kelly Tantor Audio Books Reviews

Original and fun, fast-paced book. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. Initially I thought the writing was a little shallow, especially some of the dialouge. But now that I've moved on to the 2nd book of the series, the writing has improved and the somewhat juvenile dialouge for one of the main characters is more understandable- he is somewhat immature and self assured, and his "voice" reflects that. But I love that the characters are kind and good people, and the budding romance is just enough to keep you interested without taking too many tangents away from the action! Overall, definitely a great read and would recommend.
This had likable characters and an interesting plot. There were times when I didn't understand the lack of communication between Dara and her parents. It seemed that living together they'd have talked a little bit at least. Especially when something happens that involves one of them that is big enough the whole town gossips about it.
A real swordswoman's book, written from many years of real dueling experience. Dara, a aspiring duelist from a family of Fireworkers, becomes a dueling partner of the Prince, Sivarron. She didn't want to because she wanted to win the tournament but her teacher insisted. Siv turned out to be a good man, who loves his father the King and mother the queen. Dara's father and mother were being oppressed by a man who worked for the King and the tutor for the Prince and his two princess sisters. There are all sorts of fire magic but the best was the swordplay. It is about as good as it gets.
I really enjoyed this story though I'm very happy the next book is available since I need more now (haha).

The world building was nicely detailed and unique. I love the idea of fire magic being tied to a mountain where you can just imagine the lava hanging out there waiting on fire wielders to utilize it. The idea of a way to control the amount that can be drawn is pretty unique too and gives the plot a tension between those who control it and the wielders who want more. Great set up for the main conflict.

The protagonist, Dara, is a strong female with her own idea of what she wants out of life. Unable to wield fire, she feels cut off from her family's love. It doesn't help that her wielding sister died (controller's fault) and with that goes the family's hopes of passing the legacy along. She has no desire to be stuck doing the paper end of things despite her mother's wishes. This is a great side conflict between what she wants (dueling) and what her mother wants (boring family business).

The prince protagonist is also a great character. When Dara's trainer makes her confront the prince, he's late, hung over, and doesn't take things seriously. Their sparring over time develops into a friendship where he's helping her with her popularity and she's helping him improve his skills and eventually saves his life. He's also torn between duty to the kingdom and his own wants. It's another good side conflict as these two would be romantically inclined if not for the reality of their places in society.

Finally, while some people you can guess are the 'bad guys', it isn't a sure thing with everyone as to their position in the political turmoil that is brewing. I really like that it wasn't totally predictable and even at the end I still have some doubts on some people. I loved this story and will be delving into book 2 right after hitting submit on this review. Definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a kick ass heroine fantasy.
This book definitely doesn't stand alone so I'll be glad to pick up the next one. The writing style was generally strong. It was very easy to read and I never had to backtrack to make sure I understood. I liked the characters and thought that the narrators showed all sides of the minor characters pretty well.

I didn't like that there wasn't much of an antagonist. The climax felt slightly short and by the time it happened I imagine people would see where it was going. I wish we had gone further with the climax, but the read was generally fast, easy and pleasant enough that I'll pick up the next one and not mind doing so!

Overall I would recommend it, I just wish the book had done more (even if it would then be longer).
Duel of Fire swept me away. The world was so dynamic and alive that I really could imagine the place Dara worked and lived and dueled. Dara was such an easy to root for character. She has this inner struggle of wishing she were like her father (and sister) and coming to terms with the fact she isn't (although-- TWISTS!). I feel all gushy right now with this review, but Dara was actually one of my favorite book heroines in a long time. She was torn between the girl she wanted to be and the girl she needed to be in order to keep her parents happy.

I loved Dara and Prince Siv. I mean, talk about chemistry. And can I just say how refreshing it is to read a male character who isn't a complete jerk? Siv was ALL THE THINGS> handsome, strong, kind to his sisters, generous with Dara, he brought out the parts of her she was too scared to be on her own. I loved that --when Dara was with him she was the best version of herself. But man ... talk about a cliff-hanger regarding these two! Gah! I JUST WANT THEM TO BE HAPPY AND GET MARRIED HAVE FIRE BABIES AND KISS. Okay, but I also love that this book has a very intriguing suspense plot. It is not just about the girl getting the boy. There is a lot of political intrigue and that is really what makes this book stand out and special. Oh, also the rivalry with Dara and Vine --LOVED THAT> seriously I feel like this is going to get all spolier-y. Get the book and fan-girl with me.
